Same thing happened to my left ankle playing volleyball after the 2nd time wearing them. After I recovered I thought,"maybe it was just because I was playing volleyball." Head out to shoot some hoops only to be at the ER an hour later with the right. Its a shock that Ben Wallace is still upright at this point, though that is debatable on most nights. We should get a recall on these pieces of crap.

Buy High Tops, I've blown out my ankle so many times that I cringe just thinking about it, I've been wearing high tops(they go past the top part of the ankle) and also wrap them up using tape.

btw
if you jump and ball up your toes you are less likely to roll your ankle.

Wear whatever shoes you want, but please invest in some quality ankle braces. Yes you'll look like a middle-aged white guy; but a least you'll look like a middle-aged white guy with healthy ankles.

First time I wore my Starbury's i rolled my right ankle hard, thought i broke it, but it turned out to be a sever level 2 sprain. its been about 2 1/2 months since it happened, and my ankle it still swollen in the joint area. i thought it was just cuz i landed awkwarly, or maybe that i'm a tad overweight, but its nice to know i'm not the only one

I've worn starbury's for over a year (I have the starbury 1's) and I have yet to injure myself on them (aside from a broken finger and knocked out tooth). I wouldn't blame the shoes if your defender cheap-shotted you, its just a case of bad luck.

i've had both ankles rolled plenty of times, included a partial ligament tear due to a bowen-esque play (with sounds of my ankle crackling and stars in my eyes) ..

i've found a good indicator of rollability of a shoe, is to test what the tipping angle of outside edge of the shoe is -- that is, if you balance yourself on the outside edge (i.e. left side of your left shoe, right side of your right shoe), how easily do you end up rolling? i've picked my last few pairs of shoes based on this, and *knock on wood* i've been injury free the past little while.
after breaking in the shoes for a while, you'll also note that the tipping point changes (due to stretching of the leather, sliding of foot inside the shoe), and your really need to switch shoes ..
ankle braces are also great -- haven't worn them lately, but they keep your ankles nice, warm, sweaty and bendy -- the moment your ankles cool off, they're less plyable and more likely to sprain/roll ..
oh, and if you're tired, stop playing -- playing while you're exhausted tends to lead to sloppy movement, feet dragging, loss of concentration during landings, and other lazy tendencies -- avoid avoid.

Dude that sucks that your ankle is twisted (and even worse that it came by way of a pair of starbury's), but your genius for posting it. I too twisted the hell out of my right ankle about a month ago playing ball and my shit still isn't right. I wasn't wearing Starbury's though.

Holy Ish, I have that same picture of my sprained ankle (also the right ankle, which makes you... a lefty?)!

I mean, it looks exactly the same, with the two bands.

Not that you really blame the Starbury's here, but I have sprained my ankle with $100 Nikes more than I ever have with $15 Starburys. On the other hand, that might be because I'm scared of rocking the Starburys in a real game... get better soon, holmes....

I have played two seperate seasons in old school chuck taylors. To blame your shoes for an injury like that is soft, if your ankles are so weak that you acn't stay upright without high support shoes, that sounds like a you problem

It's not the shoes.

I had 34 sprains and 3 torn ligaments over 16 years playing ball, and nothing saves you, not high tops nor strapping. Braces protect you sometimes, but even they aren't foolproof.

Unfortunately it's the nature of the sport.

i bought a couple pairs of starburys 2 years ago. i've never worn out any pair of shoes faster in my life.. $15 zips from walmart and k-mart last three times as long... the soles are total crap, made from some incredibly cheap honeycomb plastic that wears right through the paper thin inner soles. horrid shes, i only wore them to work, would never dream of wearing them for anything athletic,a t least not now...

apparently, anonymous at 5:55 pm won't (or can't) read. the poster said that he fell victim to a cheap bowen-esque trip involving the defender's foot going under yours as you jumped for a shot, leading to a hurt ankle. cheap trick by a cheap defender. and also, the game was totally different in the 80s, no way you can play the game nowadays in chucks and other old school shoes. defense back in the day wasn't as tough. so how about you grow up and watch some real basketball instead of giving out cheap advice based on lack of basketball knowledge

First of all it really does suck about your ankles. But really ive sprained my ankles in hundred dollar jordans and 150$ nikes. trying to avoid spraining your ankle is like trying not to lift up your arm. A simple wrong move could end up being disastrous. AND blaming your kicks is just unsporting...
